BMOS to Broadway
HERE'S a cracking show that simply bristles with talent and makes you proud of the younger generation. More than 30 members of the Birmingham & Midland Operatic Society's Youtheatre, aged between 8 and 18, are electric as they sing and dance their way through some of the greatest musical numbers. From the Lambeth Walk to Les Miserables, the cast meet the different challenges head on with remarkable confidence, and the audience reaction speaks for itself. Wearing a range of colourful costumes, they also display a keen appreciation of the inventive choreography by Vanessa French, Emma Wright and David Smith, while some of the lighting sequences are outstanding. Laura Gretton (On My Own), Danni Jayes (Gimme Gimme), Laura Trapp (Oom-pah-pah), Heather Gibbs (Hopelessly Devoted) are oustanding solos, while there are impressive duets from Max Williams and Rosie Hale (Room In Bloomsbury) and Joe Capella and Lyndsay Carter ((Anne on my Arm). Other highlights included the chorus is songs from Grease, and especially We Both Reached for the Gun, from Chicago, featuring Richard Bateman and Gillian Peters. Directed by Alan Hackett with Andy Turner's musical direction, this silk smooth trip to Broadway ends on Saturday night (Nov 12). Verdict: ****
