Oklahoma!
THIS Rodgers & Hammerstein musical about cowboys, farmers and their girls has been around a long time, but clearly today's youngsters enjoy performing it just as much as their parents and grandparents did. In this sparkling production the cast, aged between 10 and 18, sing, dance and act with tremendous enthusiasm. Some look set to make acting a career when their education is complete. From the moment Liam Scullion strides on stage singing Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin' in the opening scene, the standard is set. It never dips. Liam is excellent as cowboy Curly, and he has a fine partner in Gillian Peters who is a delight as his sweetheart, Laurey. Their duets are impressive, too. There are many other outstanding contributions, with Laura Gretton showing perfect comedy timing as Ado Annie, Robert Bateman, the 50-dollar man Will Parker, Jon Snowdon (Ali Hakim), Sam Strafford suitably menacing as the smouldering Jud Fry and Hannah Whittaker a cracking Aunt Eller.
